Winter-Ready Entry

Winter stops at the door

Six months of the Toronto year arrive as coats, boots, mitts, skates and one very large hockey bag. A proper mudroom swallows all of it behind closed doors — and hands you back a calm front hall. This one even washes the dog.

Closed Storage

Everything behind doors

Floor-to-ceiling lockers, one per person, with doors on everything — coats hang at full length, boots stand in their own zone at the bottom, and the everyday shoes live in open cubbies where small hands can reach them.

Doors can be completely handleless, opening with a touch on Blum TIP-ON (Hardware Book H-073), so the whole wall reads as one quiet panel. No hooks sagging with six coats, no pile by the door — the mess still exists, it just has an address now.

A bench you can sit on

Pulling boots on while hopping is a winter sport nobody chose. The bench seat lifts on a small stay lift (Blum AVENTOS HK-S, H-078) that holds it open hands-free and closes it softly — mitts, scarves, hats and the dog’s towel live inside.

Room for the hockey bag

One locker, taller and wider, with doors that swing wide for loading — the bag stands up, airs out behind a closed door, and stops perfuming the whole main floor. Skates, sticks and ski boots get the same treatment.

The Landing Spot

Keys down, shoulders down

Every entry needs one designed landing spot: a slim console and a shallow drawer exactly where you walk in — keys, mail, sunglasses, leash. It takes two seconds to use and saves every other surface in the house.

Fluted wall panels behind it add the texture (62 profiles in the Wall Panel Book), and a run of hooks at kid height keeps the small coats off the floor. Add hidden LED under the bench and the 6 a.m. hockey run stops waking the house.

Finishes

Dressed for the season

Entries work hard, so the finishes are chosen to shrug off slush and salt: deep matte doors that don’t show every fingerprint, warm natural-oil wood where hands land, and flooring from the Flooring Book that takes winter in stride. Start with these, then browse the full books:

Quick questions

How much space does a mudroom need? Less than most people think. A single wall of floor-to-ceiling lockers with a bench can transform an entry in as little as five or six feet of wall — the design is made to measure, so awkward corners, sloped ceilings and narrow halls are exactly what custom millwork is for.

Can you build one in a condo, or at the garage door? Yes. Many of our entry projects are compact: a locker run and bench inside the door your family actually uses — front, side or garage. The measurement visit is free and we confirm everything in person before anything is built.

Can a dog wash really fit? It can — we’ve built a mudroom with a tiled dog-wash station, hidden lighting and storage above and beside it (that’s the room in the photo at the top of this page). Muddy paws get handled at the door.
